Specialist trike brings joy to 6-year-old Harry

Harry Sweeney, a spirited 6-year-old diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and sensory processing difficulties, has received a Tomcat trike thanks to Simon’s Heroes children’s charity.

Harry faces challenges with everyday tasks due to his condition, including mobility and balance. This has limited his ability to participate in outdoor activities with his family.

Previously, Harry would join family bike rides by sitting on the back of their bikes as managing a standard bike is too demanding for him due to his weak core strength and sensory issues. However, this became increasingly difficult as Harry got bigger and older.

‘Family bike rides are incredibly important to us as they allow us to socialise together and share experiences, which are vital for Harry’s well-being,’ explained Tracy, Harry’s mum. ‘We’ve been looking for ways to enhance his enjoyment and independence and learning to ride and control a trike would be a significant step towards this goal.’

With the support of Simon’s Heroes, Tracy and her family were able to purchase a specialised Tomcat trike, tailored to Harry’s needs.

‘We are absolutely thrilled with Harry’s new trike! It will make a tremendous difference to all our lives and we are incredibly grateful to Simon’s Heroes. Thank you for providing this for our son, it will really boost his self-esteem and independence.’

The Tomcat trike is set to transform Harry’s outdoor experiences, offering him new avenues for physical activities and enjoyment alongside his family.

Thanks to Stafford Grammar School and Sunningdale Care Home for their generous donations which funded this project. Simon’s Heroes relies on donations from local businesses to continue making a difference.
