Eight-year-old Billy Kennedy from Tamworth, who has Autism Spectrum Condition, now has a garden that promises years of enjoyment and therapeutic benefits, thanks to the generosity of Simon’s Heroes children’s charity.
Billy’s condition affects his social communication, interaction and behaviour. He struggles to engage in conversations and social activities, which often leaves him feeling isolated, particularly at school.
‘Billy is spending more time at home as he is finding it increasingly difficult to venture out and mix’ explained Billy’s mum, Jane.
‘We wanted to enhance our outdoor space for Billy to play, expend his energy and indulge in his favourite activities which help to boost his mental and physical well-being. He really enjoys being outdoors, experiencing things like growing plants and having fun.’
A team of volunteers from Simon’s Heroes stepped in to completely transform the space into a more usable area, this included installing a patio, climbing frame and interactive water wall, as well as furnishing the area with planters, trellising and a variety of plants and flowers to further enrich the space for Billy.
‘We are thrilled with our new garden. Billy absolutely loves it and uses it daily. We will be forever grateful to you all for your hard work and inspiring ‘can do’ attitude. What an incredible team!’
A special thank you to Elliot Flannagan of Flantastic Timbers who supplied the planters and the dedicated members of Simon’s Heroes who gave their time to make this happen.
Thanks to British Gas B8 Midlands region for their generous donation which funded this project. Simon’s Heroes relies on donations from local businesses to continue making a difference.
