Comedy night raises the roof and cash for local charity

Simon’s Heroes fundraising group, in conjunction with Mortified – Live Comedy, Tamworth’s original stand-up comedy night, has raised over £1200 at its third charity comedy event.

The sell-out evening, held at Hopwas Social Club on 15th November, was compèred by Mortified’s Darren Mortiboy and supported by Radio Tamworth’s DJ Mark Paul.

Attendees were treated to comic turns from Yorkshire lad Scott Bennett, one of the fastest rising stars on the UK circuit, who headlined the evening. Scott has previously performed in the prestigious Big Value showcase for Just the Tonic at Edinburgh Fringe, which has been a springboard to success for many household names such as Jason Manford and Sarah Millican. He was supported by Andy White, a Brummie comedian who combines silly voices and mad afro hair to devastating comic effect, and Stephen Dodd, a great one liner comedian from Quinton.

The evening also included a hot meal, the ingredients for which were generously supplied and prepared by Hopwas Social Club and Bodnetts Farm Shop, and a game of Heads or Tails and Play Your Cards Right, to help maximise fundraising.

Charlotte Abbott, trustee of Simon’s Heroes said: “The evening was a great success! We are delighted with the amount raised. Darren organised a fantastic line-up; my face was aching from laughing so much! We have received some wonderful feedback from attendees too.

“Thank you to everyone that attended and helped organise, promote and run the evening. Special thanks to Clive Barker of Hopwas Social Club and his team for their continued support and generosity.”
