Two Rivers Primary School in Tamworth now has a fully refurbished sensory room, thanks to the generosity of children’s charity, Simon’s Heroes.
The school caters for students aged 4-11 years old, who have a range of learning and physical disabilities and associated difficulties such as autism, communication and sensory impairments.
‘Our sensory room was broken,’ explained Laura Slinn, Headteacher. ‘Only one piece of equipment was working, with the other items beyond repair.
‘We had been fundraising for 3 years to have it all removed and replaced with new up-to-date equipment. We approached Simon’s Heroes to see if they could help. They very kindly donated the full amount of funding, which has allowed us to have a totally new light / dark room fitted for our learners. 130 children attend our school and all of them will benefit from the use of the room during their time here.
‘Access to this resource means that we can help our special learners experience calm, become engaged with different light technology and demonstrate an increasing response to cause-and-effect resource. All of this is very beneficial and enables the children to develop independent skills in a safe environment.’
The sensory room now contains a wealth of items, including hurricane bubble columns, fibre optic carpet, floor and wall padding, laser star projectors, mirror balls, infinity tunnels, UV sensory liquid floor tiles and a sound system, to name but a few!
The project, which cost £10,000, was funded by a combination of donations from local businesses; Moonpig, Central Hub Logistics Ltd, Tamworth Co-operative Society and Centrica British Gas, as well as individuals in the community.
‘The children absolutely love the new facilities. The difference has been incredible. It has greatly enhanced our offering. This isn’t the first time Simon’s Heroes has come to our aid and we will be forever grateful for all of the support it has given us. What a wonderful charity.’
