Sixteen-year-old Charlie Blunt from Tamworth, who lives with cerebellar atrophy, now has a secure shed to store his cherished go-kart and trike, thanks to children’s charity, Simon’s Heroes.
Cerebellar atrophy is a neurological condition caused by the progressive shrinking of the cerebellum due to irreversible tissue loss. Charlie’s symptoms include slurred speech, unsteady walking and learning difficulties. Despite these challenges, his vehicles play an important role in his life.
Not only do the go-kart and trike help Charlie’s physiotherapy – strengthening various muscle groups in his legs and core – but they also give him the freedom to play outdoors.
‘Charlie’s vehicles are very important to him,’ explained his mum, Laura. ‘They give him independence and a sense of normality and allow him to take part in family activities.
‘Unfortunately, storing them outside wasn’t ideal. We needed secure, watertight storage that would protect them, that Charlie could access easily.’
Simon’s Heroes created a sturdy base for the shed while local company Papa Bear Timber Builds Ltd supplied and installed the structure complete with a ramp to facilitate easy access for Charlie and his vehicles. The charity also commissioned a commemorative plaque which sits proudly above its double doors.
‘Charlie absolutely loves his new ‘garage’ and has even set up a seating area in there! The new shed is more than just a place to store his vehicles, it preserves his independence and brings joy to his daily life. Thank you to everyone that helped make this happen.’
Simon’s Heroes would like to thank its members who gave their time and Papa Bear Timber Builds Ltd for their generous discount.
