Disabled boy gifted specialist Cruiser wheelchair

A 14-year-old boy who suffers from microcephaly, a rare neurological condition, has been gifted a Cruiser Transit Specialist Wheelchair, thanks to local fundraising group, Simon’s Heroes.

Lewis Toon, from Amington in Tamworth, was diagnosed at birth and requires constant help to cope with the symptoms of the disorder. Microcephaly is a medical condition in which the brain doesn’t develop properly resulting in a significantly smaller head and developmental issues. It can occur in the womb, or in some cases, in the first few years of life.

Lewis has learning difficulties and limited mobility and is tube fed via a gastrostomy feed. He had been using a Maclaren Major Elite special needs pushchair since he was 2 years old, which he has now outgrown. The NHS had supplied a wheelchair but unfortunately it didn’t give Lewis enough support.

He lives with his parents and siblings Harry (13) and Millie (15) and is a pupil at Two Rivers High School in Tamworth.

“We particularly enjoy family days out together,” said his mum Samantha. “But Lewis needs to feel safe and secure when we are out and about, as well as being able to sit comfortably when he is feeding. His new Cruiser Transit pushchair is so easy to manoeuvre and provides him with all of the support he needs. Simon’s Heroes’ generosity has really made a difference to his quality of life, as well as allowing us to continue our family trips out, which we cherish. Thank you!”
