Local Charity Makes A Splash at Disabled Swimming Club

A disabled swimming club in Tamworth is delighted after receiving branded swim bags for each of its members along with medals and trophies for every race that the club will participate in this year, thanks to local fundraising group Simon’s Heroes.

Tamworth Unicorns is a charitable, voluntary organisation that provides a safe and secure environment for its members to swim or learn to swim and take part in competitive galas, under the supervision of a team of qualified volunteer teachers and coaches.

The club was founded in 1974 and currently has over 100 members aged between 3-75 years with varying degrees of disability. It is run by a team of some 25+ volunteers  and is chaired by Bob Griffiths, and includes a number of club officials, committee members, life guards, instructors  and pool helpers who give their time to help make a positive difference  to the lives of people with disabilities.

The club meets fortnightly on a Saturday afternoon at Wilnecote Leisure Centre, with swim sessions held every 30 minutes starting at 2pm until 530pm. Swimming ability is assessed at every session by the club’s Chief Coach, Derek  Northcote. ‘As a rule, we don’t like to turn anyone away who has a disability and they are welcomed to join our friendly club.’

Swimming is very popular amongst people with disabilities because of the freedom of movement it offers. Tamworth Unicorns provides a new lease of life for its members as well as an opportunity for them to maintain a level of fitness, improve their confidence and make new friends. The committee also organise a number of social functions throughout the year as they believe the social aspect of the club is just as important to its members as the swimming.

‘We are extremely grateful to Simon’s Heroes for this gesture. We rely heavily on the generosity of others to allow our club to continue. Our members love their new bags, they heighten their sense of belonging and the medals will be worn with pride on race days.’ Derek Northcote, Chief Coach.

Tamworth Unicorns are always looking for volunteers to help run their swim sessions and also welcome new members. If you would like to find out more about either opportunity, contact  Joy or Derek Northcote on 01827 713630 or visit www.tamworth-unicorns.btck.co.uk

Simon’s Heroes began as a simple running and fitness club, which aimed to help worthy causes through sponsored events. The club has now grown into a major charitable organisation with dozens of dedicated members providing funds for people in need. To find out more about Simon’s Heroes visit simonsheroes.org.uk.
