At Simon’s Heroes, we are proud to support children and families facing extraordinary challenges, and recently we had the privilege of helping eight-year-old Wyatt Allen-Williams from Tamworth.
Wyatt has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, severe learning difficulties, and is non-verbal. He stopped speaking at the age of two and received his formal diagnosis in June 2023. Due to his complex needs, Wyatt has no awareness of danger and is considered a significant flight risk, making his safety a constant concern for his family.
As Wyatt has grown older and stronger, he has outgrown the practical limitations of a standard buggy. His family approached Simon’s Heroes for support in obtaining a specialist wheelchair that would better meet his needs and provide a safe, secure way for him to access the community, attend appointments and enjoy family outings.
We were delighted to fund a specialist wheelchair that will support Wyatt for many years to come. The wheelchair will help regulate his behaviour, make him more comfortable and most importantly, keep him safe while giving his family greater confidence when out and about.
When we first met Wyatt and his family, they had recently been rehoused. Unfortunately, part of the fencing surrounding their garden was missing, leaving the outdoor space insecure and unsuitable for Wyatt, who loves being outside. For children with autism, access to a safe outdoor environment can be invaluable in helping them self-regulate, relax and play.
Simon’s Heroes also arranged for the fencing to be repaired, creating a secure garden where Wyatt can safely enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time with his family.
Wyatt’s mum, Caitlyn, shared her gratitude:
“We would like to say a huge thank you to Simon’s Heroes for helping Wyatt with his specialist wheelchair and the repairs to our garden fence. Wyatt absolutely loves being outside, and without your support he wouldn’t have been able to safely enjoy the garden. Knowing the garden is now secure gives us such peace of mind, and we’re so pleased that Wyatt can spend time outdoors safely and happily. The wheelchair has also made a huge difference to our daily lives. We are incredibly grateful for everything Simon’s Heroes has done for our family.”
Thank you to everyone who supports Simon’s Heroes and makes stories like Wyatt’s possible.
