Under-the-sea themed bedroom makeover provides haven for Laila

Members of Simon’s Heroes children’s charity have transformed the bedroom of a little girl who has a serious neurodevelopmental disorder, to provide a calming environment for her to play and relax in.

Five-year-old Laila Merry, from Nuneaton, suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder caused by a chromosome abnormality she was born with. Her condition impairs her ability to interact with others. She is non-verbal and struggles to communicate clearly. Her mobility is poor and she requires a buggy when her parents take her out as this helps her to stay safe as she has no sense of danger.

Laila’s mum, Caris Merry, said: ‘Laila finds it difficult to relax and stay calm in busy environments. She is extremely noise sensitive and wears ear defenders when we take her out and when she is at school.’

Laila attends a special needs school in Nuneaton where she loves singing songs and doing cut-out puzzles alongside her friends.

‘She enjoys watching her reflection in a mirror and is fascinated with anything that flashes colours and spins and she also loves water-related toys such as her new fish-bubble tank in her room!’ Caris added.

Laila’s bedroom has been completely transformed by a team from Simon’s Heroes who volunteered their time over a weekend to completely redecorate the walls, assemble new bedroom furniture, including a Divan bed, fit sensory lights, blinds, carpet and a range of different sensory accessories. Simon’s Heroes also treated the family to an overnight stay at Alton Towers whilst the work took place.

‘Laila loves her new bedroom as it is so much more relaxing for her. Her sensory lights, new bed and black out blinds really help her to sleep at bedtime. The storage in her bedroom ensures all of her toys have their own space and everything is organised.’ Caris said.

‘We feel so fortunate to have had a bedroom makeover for Laila. To think that so many people contributed their time to do this for us is overwhelming. We could not possibly thank Simon’s Heroes enough! They were all amazing. Laila really loves her bedroom!’

Simon’s Heroes would like to thank the members that gave their time to fulfil this project and also Dreams Beds contracts department and Home Select Carpets in Shuttington for their contributions.
